A sulphur amino acid linked to B-vitamin status; samples need prompt processing.
What it is
Plasma homocysteine rises when folate, B12, or B6 pathways are stressed. Many labs require the sample to be spun soon after collection.
Why it matters
Isolated mild rises are common and need context (kidneys, thyroid, B-vitamins, sample handling). It is not a stand-alone cardiovascular diagnosis.
This guide is educational only and cannot diagnose you. Discuss results, especially anything outside your laboratory’s reference interval, or that does not match how you feel, with a GP or other appropriately qualified clinician.
How it affects the body
Homocysteine sits at a crossroads of methylation metabolism; elevated levels flag pathway stress rather than a single disease.
For athletes
Useful when exploring unexplained fatigue with low-normal B12/folate, not a routine race-week marker.
