A genetically influenced lipoprotein linked to cardiovascular risk; units vary by assay.
What it is
Lipoprotein(a) is an LDL-like particle with apolipoprotein(a). Levels are largely inherited. Labs may report nmol/L or mg/dL, do not mix unit systems.
Why it matters
High Lp(a) informs lifetime risk discussion with a clinician; it is not lowered much by usual diet changes.
This guide is educational only and cannot diagnose you. Discuss results, especially anything outside your laboratory’s reference interval, or that does not match how you feel, with a GP or other appropriately qualified clinician.
How it affects the body
Lp(a) can promote atherosclerosis and affect clotting pathways in susceptible people.
For athletes
Fitness still matters enormously for overall risk even when Lp(a) is genetically high.
