Lymphocytes

Typical unit x10⁹/L

White cells for viral defence and immune memory (T and B cells).

What it is

Lymphocytes include T cells, B cells, and natural killer cells. Absolute lymphocyte count is reported in ×10⁹/L on the FBC differential.

Why it matters

Lymphocyte counts move with viral illness, acute stress, smoking, corticosteroids, and some immune or marrow conditions. Persistent unexplained lymphocytosis or lymphopenia warrants clinical assessment: sometimes with specialist lymphocyte subsets.

A mild change around a cold in an otherwise well person is often rechecked rather than investigated aggressively.

This guide is educational only and cannot diagnose you. Discuss results, especially anything outside your laboratory’s reference interval, or that does not match how you feel, with a GP or other appropriately qualified clinician.

How it affects the body

T cells, B cells, and NK cells coordinate targeted immunity and immune memory. When depleted, viral infections linger; when clonally expanded, haematology review may be required to exclude lymphoproliferative disease.

For athletes

Heavy training can temporarily alter lymphocyte trafficking. Recurrent illness in peak season usually points to sleep, energy availability, and exposure, not one lymphocyte number. Fever and systemic symptoms still need proper medical review.
