Haematology

Monocytes %

Typical unit %

Monocytes as a percentage of all white cells.

What it is

The percentage form of the monocytes count. Percentages must add to 100, so one cell type rising pushes the others down in percentage terms without their true numbers changing - which is why laboratories range the absolute counts instead.

Why it matters

The absolute monocytes count is the number that carries clinical meaning (longer-running inflammation and tissue repair); the percentage is context for it, and most UK reports print it without a reference range.

This guide is educational only and cannot diagnose you. Discuss results, especially anything outside your laboratory’s reference interval, or that does not match how you feel, with a GP or other appropriately qualified clinician.

How it affects the body

The percentage itself does nothing; it is arithmetic over the differential.

For athletes

Read the absolute counts first; a shifted percentage alone, with normal absolute counts, is usually just arithmetic.
