Tumour markers

Free/total PSA ratio

Typical unit %

Free PSA as a percentage of total PSA, a calculated prostate marker.

What it is

The free/total PSA ratio is derived from free and total PSA results and interpreted in age- and pathway-specific ways.

Why it matters

Used to refine risk discussion when total PSA is in intermediate ranges, not a yes/no cancer test.

This guide is educational only and cannot diagnose you. Discuss results, especially anything outside your laboratory’s reference interval, or that does not match how you feel, with a GP or other appropriately qualified clinician.

How it affects the body

Different PSA forms circulate in different proportions depending on prostate tissue state.

For athletes

Follow repeat-testing intervals advised by a clinician; do not self-triage on one ratio.
