RBC count is reported in ×10¹²/L and is interpreted with haemoglobin, haematocrit, and indices: patterns over single values.
Why it matters
Interpret RBC count with haemoglobin, haematocrit, and indices. Isolated small shifts are common. High counts can accompany polycythaemia or hypoxia-driven production; low counts accompany many anaemias.
Patterns and symptoms decide next steps, not a tiny deviation from the midpoint of the range.
This guide is educational only and cannot diagnose you. Discuss results, especially anything outside your laboratory’s reference interval, or that does not match how you feel, with a GP or other appropriately qualified clinician.
How it affects the body
Red cells live about 120 days, delivering oxygen and helping carry carbon dioxide. Marrow production must match losses from bleeding or haemolysis; mismatch shows up across the FBC, not only the RBC count.
For athletes
Plasma volume expansion in endurance training can lower RBC concentration without true loss of oxygen-carrying capacity, so-called dilutional patterns. Pair with haemoglobin and ferritin and use a clinician who understands athletes.
