Total iron binding capacity

Typical unit µmol/L

Total iron-binding capacity: how much iron blood proteins can carry; often calculated.

What it is

TIBC estimates the iron-binding capacity of plasma proteins (mainly transferrin). Many labs calculate it rather than measuring it directly.

Why it matters

Raised TIBC can accompany iron deficiency; low TIBC may accompany inflammation or chronic disease. Always pair with ferritin and iron.

This guide is educational only and cannot diagnose you. Discuss results, especially anything outside your laboratory’s reference interval, or that does not match how you feel, with a GP or other appropriately qualified clinician.

How it affects the body

Binding capacity is one piece of the iron-transport system that feeds marrow haemoglobin production.

For athletes

Useful in iron panels when ferritin is borderline; hydration and acute illness still confound interpretation.
